ClipNote Privacy Policy

ClipNote ("the extension") is a Chrome extension that lets you save, summarize, and search timestamped YouTube video segments. This policy explains what data is collected, how it is used, and your choices.

1. Data We Collect

Account Information (when you sign in with Google)

• Email address — used to identify your account on the ClipNote backend.
• Display name and profile picture — shown in the extension UI.
• Firebase UID — a stable, opaque identifier used to scope your saved clips to your account.

Sign-in is powered by Google Sign-In via Firebase Authentication. ClipNote never sees or stores your Google password.

Authentication Tokens

Firebase ID tokens (signed JWTs) are obtained after sign-in and sent as a Bearer header on API requests to authenticate you. Tokens are cached in memory only for up to 2 minutes and are never written to disk or transmitted to any third party other than the ClipNote backend.

Clip Activity

When you explicitly save a clip, the following information is sent to and stored by the ClipNote backend:

• YouTube video ID and source URL
• Video title and channel name
• Start and end timestamps of the saved segment

This data is the core purpose of the extension. It is used solely to store, enrich, and display your saved clips.

Extension Settings (stored locally)

The following values are stored in chrome.storage.local on your device only and are never transmitted to any server:

• Backend URL preference
• A random client ID (UUID) used to scope clips when you are not signed in
• Optional OpenAI API key and YouTube Data API key, if you choose to provide them
• A preference for whether to skip segment video download

2. Data We Do NOT Collect

• Browsing history outside of YouTube
• Keystrokes, mouse movements, or scroll position
• Health, financial, or payment information
• The content of your emails, messages, or other personal communications
• GPS or precise location data

3. How We Use Your Data

• To authenticate you and associate your saved clips with your account.
• To store, process, and display your clips (AI summarization, transcript search, related clips).
• We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or any unrelated third parties.

4. Third-Party Services

• Firebase / Google — Authentication only. Governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
• OpenAI — If an OpenAI API key is configured, video transcript excerpts are sent to OpenAI to generate clip summaries. Governed by OpenAI's Privacy Policy.
• Railway — The ClipNote backend is hosted on Railway. Data is stored on Railway-managed infrastructure.

5. Data Retention

Your clips and account data are retained on the ClipNote backend as long as your account is active. You can delete individual clips at any time from the extension. To request full account deletion, contact us at the email below.

6. Children's Privacy

ClipNote is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect any changes. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
